Introduction to Shiatsu
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing acupressure therapy
“Shiatsu” is a Japanese word meaning “finger pressure”.
Shiatsu treatment uses the same points on the body as acupuncture, but does not involve any needles. Shiatsu involves applying pressure with thumbs, hands, fingers and sometimes even elbows, knees and feet. Developed in Japan, it originates from the traditions of Oriental medicine as well as western massage techniques.
What is a Shiatsu treatment like?
Shiatsu is a holistic "full body" treatment. If you have a particular physical problem (a stiff back for example) the practitioner will typically treat areas throughout your whole body, not just the affected area. As well as pressure with thumbs, fingers and palms, Shiatsu can involve stretching and rotation of joints and limbs.
A Shiatsu treatment is most usually received on a padded futon at floor level, but may also take place sitting on a specially designed Shiatsu treatment seat or a kneeling chair.
A futon based full body treatment session typically lasts approximately one hour, although the first session may be slightly longer. This is because your practitioner will ask for and note details of your current state of health, any medical conditions, medical history, and lifestyle.
Seated treatments are usually of shorter duration (20 minutes).
What should I wear for a Shiatsu treatment?
Shiatsu differs from some better known forms of massage in that the receiver remains fully clothed throughout the treatment. Comfortable stretchy clothing is ideal, something like jogging trousers and top, and a pair of cotton socks.
